Whether you want to go on an adventurous hike, ski, sample some local fine dining, or go to a movie; there are plenty of activities to choose from. But what about those ideas that are just plain old different; where at the end of the date it leaves you going “wow, why haven’t I done something like this sooner?”.

We don’t want you to just have the typical coffee and or dinner date, where you’re bored at the end of it – and honestly may not want to go on another. (Coffee and dinner dates are good here and there) but we want you to experience some fun and adventure – even something unconventional.

Here’s our picks for the best out-of-the-box and unique date ideas in Vancouver:

11  Dating in the Dark
This is literally a “blind” date. Dinner at the Dark Table is served completely in the pitch black. If dating wasn’t already nerve racking enough, now you’re spending your entire date in the dark while trying to eat, drink, and gab away. This new experience is bound to get your other senses tingling.  Enjoy your evening without any distractions!

Price: $33 – $39
Address: 2611 West 4th Avenue
Hours: Seatings from 5:45 p.m. – 8:45 p.m.

10  Cat Cafe aka Catfe
Instead of taking your date to a typical coffee shop why not take them to one that comes with a side of ‘pur’fection! Enjoy your cup of Joe alongside these furry felines. (Make sure you’re dates not allergic first off – or you’ll be spending your day in the hospital… not the out-of-box date we would recommend).

Catfe in Vancouver is part cafe, part foster home for cats, and an obvious cat lovers paradise. Currently they have about 10-15 felines in shop that are rescues looking for a good home. Come in for a visit, have some snacks and sips while you enjoy the company of these friendly kitties – who knows maybe you’ll be leaving with more than a satisfied stomach?

9  Food Truck Crawl
This date idea is perfect for all-year round. We know that during the summer the food trucks are lined up and there are festivals and events centered around them. However, for the colder months you may just have to venture out and find some of your favourites. Bundle up, grab your umbrella, your comfy/stretchy pants and spend the day food truck hoping and get a taste of everything from all over the world!

8  Painting and Cocktails
Let the inner child in you come out while enjoying some delicious cocktails. This date idea is a perfect to let your creativity shine while having a good time. With many different locations to choose from – you can see where a local Paint Nite is taking place.

Make sure to check out their website to find the next event near you . Paint and drink parties take place at local bars all over Vancouver (*certain locations sell out quick, so make sure to reserve your spot fast).

  Sky diving
Why not cross something off the good ol’ bucket list – plus I am sure you’ll definitely impress your date if you suggest this idea (and actually go through with it)!

Skydive Vancouver offers Tandem Skydiving, that are all done with experienced and qualified Instructors at the Abbotsford Skydive Centre. Why not get your adventure pants on, hit the roads, get amped up during your 45 minute drive, and free fall… out of a plane.

6   Scuba Diving
I bet you didn’t know you can scuba dive in Vancouver? Explore BC’s wildlife from another perspective and take the plunge with your date – literally! The water will definitely be chilly all year-round but the area offers amazing diving experiences for the pros and beginners. Regardless of the cold temperatures you’ll be able to see an abundance of very cool aquatic life.

The only downside to this option is you need to be certified (it should be noted that once you are it is good internationally, so you can take your training anywhere). Check out Vancouver Scuba School or Ocean Pro Divers. For the best spot to dive in Vancouver, many divers choose Whytecliff Park park as their destination of choice.

5    Snowshoeing
Enjoy the outdoors and get a leg workout at the same time. Explore the North Shore Mountain trails via snowshoe – make snow angels, an igloo, or just bask in the wintry white glow with your special someone.

If you’re wanting to make this date extra special, Mount Seymour offers a package called the ‘Chocolate Fondue’ snowshoe tour. This guided experience will lead you through rolling forested trails to a hand-carved snow lounge where you will indulge in a delicious chocolate fondue featuring fresh-cut fruit and special dipping treats. Something about snow, stars, and chocolate scream – perfect date!

Price: $10 trail pass, $27 snowshoe rental

3  Games Night
There is always something so fun and charming about playing boarding games with a bunch of friends over drinks – and makes for a great low-key unique style date. Things can get a little heated between competitive players, but just remember it’s just for fun!

Storm Crow Tavern is a local favourite – as soon as you walk in their’s spaceships hanging from the ceiling and Stars Wars posters along the walls. On-top of that they have every game you can think of and the food is delicious, paired with some great drink specials. This place is great as an easy ice-breaker for a first date or an unique way to bring excitement to your current relationship.

Two other places in the city that have a good games night agenda are:
Six Acres on 203 Carrall St and Water Kitchen & Bar on 131 Water St.

2   Go for a Test Drive
This may seem a little unconventional and possibly boring – but it actually can be quite thrilling and make for a super fun day. When we say go on a test drive we don’t mean with a typical minivan or that cool looking “mom” car you’ve always thought was practical to own.

Choose a car you’ve always dreamed of owning, that’s too expensive, or just not practical. A lot of car dealerships will actually let you drive off the lot with a vehicle for a full day or even a whole weekend to get the full feel of the car. Obviously don’t let them in your secret date idea – but pick out a nice car, grab some snacks and hit the open road. Go explore and have fun in your new ride for the weekend. (* guys make sure you let her have a turn driving as well!)

1  Crash a wedding
Yes, you read that correct. Crashing a wedding can be a fun “role play” date if you will. If you don’t know what I am talking about go watch “Wedding Crashers” with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn and take some notes.

Be yourselves, or be who ever you want – who’s going to know? Open bar, appetizers, dancing – it’s the perfect date – all you have to keep telling yourself and the guests is “you knew the bridge in college, or that job back in the day”. Take a lot of photos and most importantly have fun!
