With its prime location on the west coast, Vancouver is a great starting point when looking for cheap vacation options. From regions and cities with a day’s drive to affordable flights to locations further away, here are 11 places to go on your next cheap(ish) vacation:
11 Sunshine Coast
Just a short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, the Sunshine Coast is a great place to head for a cheap vacation. From Gibsons right across the way to further up the coast in Powell River, the Sunshine Coast is full of charming towns and beautiful views.
Our province’s capital, Victoria, is a beautiful city to escape to. With many British influences still visible around the city, you can feel like you’re headed across the pond without the long flight. The best time to go is in the spring and fall when the weather is relatively nice, but the prices are lower than in the summer high season.
With over 170 wineries in the region to explore, the Okanagan is a very affordable vacation when you just need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Many of the wineries have free tastings or will comp your tasting if you purchase a bottle, just remember to have a designated driver!
8 Astoria, Oregon
The oldest city west of the Rockies, Astoria, Oregon, near the mouth of the Columbia river, is full of interesting things to do on a budget. Explore its vintage shops and Victorian homes, follow in the footsteps of your favourite movies, learn about its history at the maritime museum and get up close to a shipwreck in the nearby Fort Stevens State Park.
7 Los Angeles
Rub shoulders with the rich and famous, take in the city’s museums or head to the nearby beaches, there are so many things to do in Los Angeles that your only limitation is time. Visit from January to April to take advantage of cooler weather (but still in the 20s!) and lower hotel prices.
6 Las Vegas
Las Vegas is a fantastic vacation spot for all budgets. With daily cheap flights out of Bellingham, just across the border (take the Quick Shuttle bus!) and many last minute hotel deals to be had, it is a great option for a getaway. For non gamblers, there are shows, hotels to explore and if you head out of the city, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is nearby.
Head up to America’s Last Frontier with a cruise. Stop in a variety of ports along the way, take in majestic glaciers and fjords and enjoy good food and entertainment aboard your ship.
With stunning vistas and pristine beaches, wildlife watching opportunities, yoga and wellness retreats, and plenty of adventure activities including some of the best surfing in Latin America (including VOLCANO SURFING ) Nicaragua has become the new Costa Rica – but much more affordable. A true travel gem, it ranked #4 on the Top 10 Countries to visit in 2015 according to Lonely Planet.
Imagine strolling along the colourful beach town of Tenerife as the warm ocean wind whips at your hair while looking out at the mountains. Tenerife has everything. The south is basically like Vegas on the beach while the North is traditional and boasts amazing hiking trails and cute towns.
2 Hong Kong
With multiple flight sales to Hong Kong every year, it’s easy to get yourself across the Pacific for a reasonable price. Once there, you can eat very well for low prices and even at Michelin star restaurant – Tim Ho Wan which serves up affordable dim sum dishes.
1 Your favourite destination
Anywhere can be a cheap vacation as long as you’re flexible. With flight deals popping up regularly if you are flexible on your destination and dates of travel, you can go anywhere in the world for a reasonable price.
